The Standard Formula
WPM = (characters typed / 5) / minutes
Every typing speed test uses the same core formula. Instead of counting actual words (which vary wildly in length), the industry standard defines one "word" as exactly 5 characters, including spaces. This standardization means your score on Kwerty is directly comparable to any other typing test in the world.
EXAMPLE CALCULATION
You type 300 characters in 60 seconds. That is 300 / 5 = 60 standard words, completed in 1 minute. Your WPM is 60 WPM. Double the characters in the same time? That's 120 WPM.
WHY 5 CHARACTERS?
The average English word is about 4.7 characters long. Rounding to 5 (including the space after each word) gives a clean, universal unit. This prevents short words from inflating scores and long words from deflating them.
CHARACTERS PER MINUTE (CPM)
Some tests report CPM instead of WPM. The conversion is simple: CPM = WPM ร 5. So 60 WPM equals 300 CPM. CPM can be more granular for very short tests, but WPM is the standard most people recognize and the metric used by employers, schools, and typing certifications worldwide.

GROSS WPM
Gross WPM = (all keystrokes / 5) / minutes
Gross WPM measures your raw typing speed. Every character you type counts, whether it is correct or not. This number reflects how fast your fingers move but says nothing about accuracy. A typist who makes many errors could have a high gross WPM but produce unusable text.
NET WPM
Net WPM = Gross WPM - (errors / minutes)
Net WPM is the industry-standard measurement. It takes your gross WPM and penalizes uncorrected errors. This is the number that matters for jobs, certifications, and real productivity. Most typing tests, including Kwerty, report net WPM because it reflects how much usable text you actually produce.
