When one mistake ends the run, the median drops from 37 to 25 WPM β a ~32% penalty. Stakes change typing more than any keyboard ever will. It's also why your speed in a relaxed test overstates what you'll type under a deadline.
Methodology & limitations
Source. Every score submitted to kwerty's public leaderboard between March 25 and August 29, 2026 β 2,751 raw rows. WPM uses the standard 5-characters-per-word formula. Accuracy counts every keystroke; there is no backspace forgiveness.
Bot exclusion. Three automated accounts (metronomic ~35s game cadence, 100+ games/day, flat WPM) contributed 1,509 rows and were removed, leaving 1,242 human tests by 289 players. Exclusion thresholds: 100+ games per username, or 50+ games with a median gap under 120 seconds.
Limitations. This is a self-selected sample of people who chose to play a typing game β likely a bit faster and more motivated than the general population. Tests are 30β60 second bursts, which run faster than sustained real-world typing. Accuracy is stricter than formal typing tests. Percentiles describe this dataset, not humanity.

What is the average typing speed?
In kwerty's dataset of 1,242 real tests, the median attempt is 36 WPM and the mean is 37.4 WPM. That lines up with the commonly cited ~40 WPM average for the general population. The median player's personal best is 42 WPM β most people can beat their typical speed by a few WPM on a good run.
What is a good typing speed?
Based on this data, 51 WPM puts an attempt in the top 25%, and 69 WPM puts it in the top 10%. If your personal best is above 62 WPM you type faster than three quarters of players; above 82 WPM you're in the top 10% of players. Anything over 100 WPM is genuinely elite β only about 3% of players ever record it.
Does typing faster mean typing less accurately?
No β the data shows the opposite. Players typing under 30 WPM averaged 69.5% accuracy, while players at 70+ WPM averaged 77.8%. Accuracy and speed rise together, because fast typing is built on consistent, correct keystrokes rather than rushed guessing. Training accuracy first is how you get fast.
Why is the median accuracy only 76%?
Kwerty's arcade modes push players to type at the edge of their speed, and every keystroke counts against you β there is no backspace forgiveness in the score. Formal typing tests, where people type comfortably below their limit, typically show 92%+ accuracy. The 76% median reflects players deliberately red-lining, not everyday typing quality.
How much does pressure affect typing speed?
Measurably. The median score in kwerty's survival mode β where a single mistake ends the run β is 25 WPM, versus 37 WPM in the timed rush mode. That's roughly a 12 WPM (about 32%) penalty for typing under one-mistake pressure, the largest single effect in the dataset.
How many people can type 100 WPM?
In this dataset, 3.1% of players have recorded a personal best of 100 WPM or higher. The single fastest verified real score is 126 WPM. For context, competitive typists in global competitions sustain 150β200+ WPM, but they are a vanishingly small fraction of all typists.
